AI’s Anatomy

Client: Wilson Center

A new AI model being accused of racial bias isn’t an entirely unfamiliar scenario. In the new interactive multiplayer, “AI’s Anatomy,” the Wilson Center and FableVision ask players to investigate the intricacies of a fictional healthcare AI model accused of racial bias. The interactive was created as part of the Wilson Center’s Serious Games Initiative and exists as an interactive portion of a lecture series hosted by the Wilson Center to educate professionals in the political sphere about bias in AI. “AI’s Anatomy” was created to be played in tandem with a lecture focused on Obermeyer’s study; dissecting racial bias in an algorithm used to manage the health of populations.

The interactive is hosted by B3TA, the AI model’s robotic multi-armed representative. Up to six players attempt to retrain the AI model to correctly sort patients into the high-risk program. Across three rounds of play, players vote on the importance of the categories, age, annual health cost, sex, insurance type, number of visits, pre-existing condition, race, and medications, to correct the model’s racial bias. “AI’s Anatomy” is WCAG 2.0 AA Level accessible.
