Filet-O-Fling

Client: National Wildlife Federation

With a history of over 50 years, the National Wildlife Federation’s Ranger Rick magazine was transformed into an award-winning magazine app or “appzine.” The robust subscription-based app, released through the Apple Newsstand, included five issues packed with games, jokes, articles, and seasonal decorations. While National Wildlife has decided to move back to a print-only magazine, Ranger Rick’s Tree House appzine garnered multiple awards including, 2013 AEP (Association of Educational Publishers) Innovation Awards: Gold Award for Best Educational Innovation of the Year.

One of the games, Filet-O-Fling, takes place at an iceberg, where the penguins have congregated for lunch. Fish swim onto the screen in the water under the iceberg. The player must locate a penguin that wants the type of fish that is swimming by, and fling it to them. Fish are transported with a simple drag-and-release mechanic.
